America’s reluctant participation in the First World War had far reaching implications. Within the country, people stood divided in their opinion about America’s domestic and international policies. Immigration policies were put under the scanner. Americans were eager to safeguard everything they had salvaged from the first economic depression and World War I. This included religion, culture, jobs and an increasingly affluent lifestyle.
The League of Nations proposed by President Woodrow Wilson was looked upon as a needless meddling in international affairs. Heated debates raged on in the Senate over whether or not America should accept responsibilities of global leadership. The Treaty of Versailles, which signaled the end of war with Germany, was yet to be ratified by the Senate. Soldiers returning home from European battlefields were looking for a fresh start to life. Amidst this chaos, one unifying sentiment stood out distinctly - Americanism. Both Republicans and Democrats spoke boldly in support of their leaders and the principles they upheld.
This fascinating CD takes you back to those turbulent times, when the walls of the Senate echoed with such passionate discourses. Fifteen historic speeches give you a good ‘feel’ of some of the most the tumultuous moments in America’s history.
Post-World War I era witnessed the emergence of some of the greatest American politicians. The likes of Homer Cummings, James Cox and Calvin Coolidge responded to the challenges faced by the country by making some of the most moving and forceful speeches in the history of the United States. The Democrats extolled the achievements of the party while the Republicans called for a change in political order. Featured on this CD are fifteen speeches from this historic era. These include speeches made by:
- Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Homer S. Cummings
