Ironically, the Dutch who first explored the fascinating state of Connecticut in the 17th century chose not to settle there. After opening a few trading posts, they moved on, leaving the state open for occupation by the English puritans from Massachusetts. From its inception, political independence and democratic governance have characterized Connecticut. In fact, the first seeds for a democratic constitution were sown in this state earning it the nickname "The Constitution State."

Connecticut’s attitude towards and contribution to the Revolution is epitomized in the words of Patriot and spy Nathan Hale who, just prior to being hanged by the British said, "I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." Interestingly, from 1703 to 1875, Connecticut had two capitals - Hartford and New Haven, before Hartford edged New Haven out of the reckoning.

Although agriculture and trade were primary activities of 17th century colonists, limited land soon compelled Connecticut to turn to manufacturing. Besides being uncannily ingenious and inventive, the people of Connecticut were also gifted in production skills. It is not surprising then, that industry has thrived in Connecticut since earliest times. While yet a colony, the state’s industry had flourished enough to worry the British in far away England.

Early in the 19th century, Eli Whitney and Simeon North began making Connecticut firearms with interchangeable parts. This is generally recognized as the beginning of modern mass production. Through the years, Connecticut’s industrial genius has given the world such varied inventions as vulcanized rubber, friction matches, sewing machines, steamboats, safety fuses, lollipops, corkscrews, mechanical calculators, cylindrical locks and the submarine.

CONTENTS:

This CD features graphic maps of the state which among other things, highlight the industrial scenario in Connecticut at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:

This CD offers a fresh perspective on the definition of maps and records the history of Connecticut in manner that is forcefully alluring. Normally, one thinks of maps as a series of lines and topographical features that present an accurate description of the relative size, location and shape of a relevant geographical area. This CD brings together the best cartographic creations of the state from the 18th century. The maps seen here are pretty diverse in nature and content and thus offer a fabulous overview of the state’s political, industrial and civic status at the time. The cityscapes are of particular interest to those engaged in town-planning, engineering, construction and to history buffs as well. Textual assistance helps in identifying the period, geographical location, historic significance and other trivia help in identifying the locales, many of which have undergone a sea change over the years. The eye for detail and penchant for artistic brilliance and accuracy is quite evident in each of these maps. Over and above serving as a progressive historic chart of Connecticut, however, these maps bring into sharp focus the preponderance of early industrial establishment in Connecticut. This CD is a great addition to your collection if you happen to be a collector of antique maps, a history buff or a student researching the history of Connecticut.

CUSTOMER'S REVIEWS:

"For someone hailing from Connecticut as I do, this CD was a fabulous revelation. It thrilled my heart to learn about the pioneering role this state played in setting up industry. While most men may have passed on to more fertile lands, the hardy citizens of Connecticut chose to put the resources at hand to good use. No wonder it is the leading manufacturer of consumer goods in the country today. And yes, the maps are really out of this world."
