Born in 1732 to a family of Virginia planters, Washington grew up learning the morals, manners and knowledge which were a vital part of the makeup of an 18th century Virginia gentleman. Trained in military arts and devoted to the ideology of western expansion, Washington served meritoriously in the American Revolution, using cleverly plotted strategies to catch the enemy by surprise, eventually forcing the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown.

Realizing that the Nation under its Articles of Confederation was not functioning well, Washington became a prime mover in the steps leading to the Constitutional Convention at Philadelphia in 1787. When the new Constitution was ratified, the Electoral College unanimously elected Washington President.

As President, Washington laid great emphasis on foreign policy and discouraged excessive party spirit and geographical distinctions among congressmen. More importantly, Washington set a precedent for the men who took up the office of the US President after him. His determination to stand by all that was true and right is reflected in these lines he penned to James Madison soon after becoming the President: "As the first of every thing, in our situation will serve to establish a Precedent, it is devoutly wished on my part, that these precedents may be fixed on true principles."

Each President came from a background that was quite different from that of others in terms of geography, ancestry and political leanings. Yet, they were all unified in the task at hand - to lead one of the most powerful and influential nations in the World.

There were a few other characteristics that were common among these men - unmatched patriotism, vision and determination, which marked them as being extraordinary. For all the seriousness and single-mindedness that was required of them while in office, these great men seldom needed to be reminded of the fact that they remained mere mortals, given to the same desires and needs as the man on the street. Perhaps it was this rare quality that made them even more memorable than they may otherwise have been.
